ANNA TONIOLO

I’m an independent freelance journalist based near Venice, working in Italy and across borders. My reporting explores environmental conflicts, social justice, gender issues, and the intersection of technology and human rights, with a focus on how these dynamics shape people’s lives and communities. I mainly work on in-depth stories and investigations published by national and international outlets, often collaborating with transnational teams on cross-border reporting projects.

I approach journalism as a collective and investigative practice. Between 2021 and 2022, I was part of the editorial team at Facta.news, where I strengthened my fact-checking skills and developed a solid OSINT-based methodology to verify claims, data, and narratives.

Alongside written reporting, I work with audio as a space for critical storytelling. I write and host Veramente, a weekly podcast that looks at current affairs through the lens of disinformation, unpacking how false narratives and harmful stereotypes affect the everyday lives of individuals and communities. I also wrote and hosted A Fuoco, a podcast focused on climate and disinformation, where each episode features a different guest and perspective on the climate crisis.

From 2024 to 2025, I was a reporting fellow at AlgorithmWatch. During the fellowship, I investigated the environmental footprint of data centers in Lombardy, focusing on land use, soil consumption, and the tensions these infrastructures have generated with local communities.

My work has been supported by international journalism grants, including Journalismfund Europe, allowing me to pursue long-term, collaborative, and public-interest reporting.

Beyond publication, I see journalism as a practice that continues through public engagement and dialogue with communities. I have taken part in numerous talks and panel discussions at festivals and locally organised events to present my work, often in close connection with the territories I report on. This approach is part of a broader reflection on journalism as a process that does not end with publication, but extends through dissemination, encounters, and exchange, especially in internal areas and outside major urban centres.

I also have experience in journalism training and educational activities with diverse audiences, ranging from early-career journalists and aspiring reporters to workshops with children and teenagers in schools. My teaching focuses on journalism and journalistic methods, investigative and environmental reporting, as well as gender-related issues.
